I am starting to come to the realization that this entire Salt Lake City run is a standout run. That one show gets all the attention, and some Jokers managed
...
to write completely incorrect reviews about how terrible this night was on other sources. I don't know what their problem was while they were listening or what they were expecting. Maybe they messed up and put a 1980 show in right before they listen to this LOL
First of all, this source is Leaps and Bounds better than all of the other audiences that circulate. I don't know how this person was able to get this quality of sound while other sources are booming and echoey. It almost sounds as if there's a little bit of soundboard mixed in it's so clear! This is a very very good audience of a very very good show!!
There are shows later in the tour that feature more jamming, but this is typical of the kind of variety we would get in pretty much any year of the modern era.
What makes this show worth listening to is the band is on fire, and Jerry is actually giving an outstanding vocal performance. In some ways I could say I've hardly heard anything like it, but he rises to the occasion vocally a lot on these 95 tours. His guitar playing is very engaged and he is definitely playing some thoughtful solos and on top of his game, as best as he could be it seems. Sometimes he's dragging and a little behind the beat and just tiny symptoms of his general guitar playing malaise shows up here... but I do mean just a tiny hint.
I also have to mention how awesome Vince is playing on this show. And truthfully, he is at the top of his game and the best playing he ever did with Grateful Dead happens during this last year. He uses classic piano sounds, string swells, all kinds of ice patches gone are all those cheesy manufactured imitation organ sounds they saddled him with in the early part of his tenure. His fills are imaginative and his solos are really fun. On these audience recordings especially, his high vocals really fit in and the guys are just as much of a vocal Powerhouse when they're all singing together as they ever were. It is an absolute shame Vince gets crapped on by so-called fans because they don't know how to listen and they have bought into the lazy internet talk cliches that all 1995 dead is terrible. Oh well, I guess they have fun listening to their 1990 or their may 77 on repeat LOL
Really hot first set and pretty damn cool second set with a long pre drums and a very spiraling out of control type musical deconstruction at the end of estimated.
I will say this, and I know this will be just a matter of opinion, but after 30 years of post Jerry dead including the recent years of dead and company, which I have enjoyed and am thankful that Bob Weir has worked so hard to give us, I can honestly say I totally understand why he slows the tempo down on a lot of these songs these days. Frankly, the Breakneck speed that the Grateful Dead would play many of these songs borders on musical ridiculousness. Just way too fast and no Groove or funkiness absolutely whatsoever. But at the same time it is high energy so I'm sure a lot of people like it. But if I was any of these guys in the band, I couldn't go on for multiple more decades playing the songs like this. So hats off to Bob for Reinventing their own wheel, and screw the lazy haters that can't get over the tempo shift, when they slurp all over late 70's dead which features WAY slowed down songs and sterile playing. We all know the REAL reasons they hate on Dead and Co and Ratdog before that, and they should turn in their Deadhead card for it!! But i digress.... That all being said. It's fun to go back in time and hear what they were doing. This is a great show and you won't be disappointed!

Totally disagree band was helpless and too f'd up to enjoy in '95... Jerry plays well here pretty much throughout. Rest of the band is kicking ass. Worthy!
...
Thx Keith L. for this quality '95 Grateful Dead show recording and for also being out there (I recently noticed) recording Bob Weir Wolf Bros shows :)

Subject: Show 1 of the final year....
Subject: Show 1 of the final year....
I've decided that it is time to give all of 1995 a listen.... warts and all.... I saw a handful of summer 95 shows and cried on my way out of RFK knowing
...
that Jerry was on his last legs unless there was some serious medical intervention.... Anyway, a few observations.... First, not nearly the type of train wreck I suffered through at Giants Stadium. In fact, some strong vocals, and good pace on most tunes. Second, even when Jerry's guitar misses, the band is still firing on all cylinders. Third, no matter how bad any show ever was, there was never anyplace I'd have rather been than surrounded by fellow tripping, bumbling idiots listening to my favorite live band. Anyway, the show.... With the exception of a somewhat dragging Alabama Getaway and If The Shoe Fits [heard it live 3 times and just never a fan....], a very solid outing. Don't even have to qualify it with "for 1995". Absolutely no hint of the carnage that would be summer 1995. And I know I've said this in other reviews, but to the extent I've listened to 1995 shows, the indoor shows seem stronger - - even during the summer. Still think the oppressive heat did a lot of damage to Jerry's overweight body and overburdened heart - - with or without the heroin!!! Don't rate shows I wasn't at because the vibe is as much a part of the experience as the music. If I were going to rate this one, and without the 95 qualifier, a solid 3 stars.... not spectacular... not searing Jerry.... just good, tight music played by the greatest live band to ever grace our planet.

I saw this show in 1995, just a few months before Jerry passed. I found it online and listened again for the first time in 20 years. Still gives me chills.
...
Jerry roared on "I Know You Rider", as he did on most of the show. Powerful stuff. What a great find.

This was a very special show for me, as I attended it at the very last minute and I had revelations. I used to have old analogues of this show, and it
...
was in the regular rotation for a LONG time. As the years rolled by, the digital age replaced the cassete tape age.
Well, I revisted this show for the first time in at least 10 years and felt like I was hearing this show for the first time. I saw 40 late era Dead shows (1993-1995), and this show has the most aggressive playing and singing I think I ever heard from Jerry live.
He is not tinkling in the background, he is up front in the mix and leading the band. His vocals are very clear, and there are only 1 or 2 slight vocal flubs.
I remember, I was at this show and was really bummed by how they came out of the gate. At the time, "Jack Straw" and "Sugaree" seemed rather lifeless. When I heard it today, I was kinda blown away. At the show, towards the end of "Walkin Blues", Jerry kicks it into another level. I remember turning to my touring buddy and asking him "What's he doing?". Jerry just came alive, I was basically tuned in with Jerry for the rest of the show after an initial disappointment while attending. Funny how memories get better with age.
Well, the rest of the show is really fun, not the most jammed out or psychedelic show, but one that harkens back to the days of the "Good Old Grateful Dead".
I forgot how much I miss audience tapes! Wow! These copies are fantastic, a little light on the base, but they sound great if you turn it up!
Peace!
